Short answer
What kind of game is Hawthorn?
Hawthorn is a charming co-op sandbox RPG that plays as a village life sim, inspired by Victorian-era European fairytales and the spirit of 80s and 90s anthropomorphic animal adventure stories. You play as a small woodland creature building a lakeside village in the valley of Windermere, recruiting endearing NPCs, farming, crafting, exploring and celebrating the seasons' traditions.
It is developed by NEARstudios and is playable solo or with friends. It has no announced release date.
The official Steam description sets the scene directly: once upon a time, woodland creatures built a trading post in forgotten Windermere Valley, but now it is the haunt of varmints, fairy lights, and mysterious rumours about why this village was abandoned.
“To you, however, this is a hope for a new life. Recruit villagers and grow a community. Defend against the elements and forest tricksters. Thrive and celebrate the seasons’ traditions. Rebuilding won’t be easy, but you and your newfound friends are up to the challenge.”
The official site frames the world with the line “A world bound together by a fragile peace. East and West. Animal and Fey.” That animal-and-fey split is the setting’s core tension, and it is why the game is described as both cosy and a little strange.
NEARstudios lists eight headline features on Steam. Read together, they describe the loop: build a village, staff it with NPCs, and keep it alive through the year.
The community-building pillar is the one the studio talks about most. Villagers are not decoration: they take jobs, react to their housing, and track three separate stats. See the Villagers guide for how those systems fit together.
NEARstudios is a group of developers from AAA studios including Bethesda, BioWare and Naughty Dog who chose the indie path for their first passion project. The team is led by Heather Cerlan (Bethesda, Naughty Dog) and Jason Richardson (Bethesda, Funcom). Bruce Nesmith, lead designer on Skyrim, is also contributing.
Hawthorn has been funded in part by its community through Kickstarter, Ko-Fi and PayPal. The studio is explicit that ongoing development depends on that support, which is why playtests are routed through supporter tiers.
Because the pitch sits between two established genres, press coverage has leaned on comparisons. The official site quotes three:
Those are marketing quotes, not design documents. If you want the mechanical comparison rather than the vibe, Hawthorn vs Stardew Valley breaks down what actually overlaps and what does not.
Steam lists Windows system requirements only, and English as the sole interface, audio and subtitle language. No console release has been announced.
The minimum requirements published on the store page are: Windows 10 64-bit or newer, an Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400, 8 GB RAM, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or equivalent AMD card, DirectX 11, and 50 GB of storage. Full spec table on the Steam page breakdown.
We will not guess at these. They are tracked and updated the moment they change:
