Hawthorn Villagers

Two sentences from the Winter 2025/2026 development update define the whole system:

• “You can now assign NPCs jobs instead of jobs being hard-coded, but not every NPC will enjoy doing every job!”
• “Crops now need to be watered to grow, and if you want NPC farmers will happily do this job.”

That makes job assignment a matching problem rather than a logistics problem. Practically:

• Talk first, assign second. Preferences are discovered through the social layer — which is why the Host role exists in co-op.
• Use Happiness as the signal. It measures the current day, so a bad job fit shows up there before it shows up anywhere else.
• Watering is the first job to delegate. It is a hard growth requirement and the single largest daily time sink in the early game — see Farming.
• Do not double-assign. In co-op, two players assigning the same villager is the most common way to waste the preference system.

NPCs now care about the furniture and decor in their home and are happier if they have what they want. That single line turns decor into a Happiness input rather than a cosmetic extra.

Two supporting details amplify it:

• Interiors are visible. Housing was reworked so you can see inside from outside and watch the weather from within, replacing separately loaded interiors with faked windows that “felt too claustrophobic”.
• Walls are usable. You can hang items on walls through the building system, which expands the decor surface area.

The trap is the delay: because Morale accumulates from Happiness over time, a decor mistake is slow to become visible and slow to undo. Build one fully decorated home before starting several shells — see Village Building.

Three quality-of-life systems make the village feel staffed rather than scripted:

• Leisure activities. Villagers unwind after work. Whether this feeds back into Happiness has not been stated.
• Banter. Villagers chatter with each other — not in dialogue with you — and the system can now speak to nearly any situation. The studio’s example: villagers talking about the rain while it is raining.
• Journal. A journal in your menu tracks all the conversations you have had with NPCs, so threads can be picked up rather than lost.

Banter is worth treating as a signal rather than flavour: if villagers start talking about something, the world simulation has noticed it too.

• The named roster. No individual villager has been published, so there is no villager list page — only this systems page.
• Recruitment conditions. “Recruit villagers and grow a community” is confirmed; how is not.
• The complete job list. Farming is the only job confirmed by name.
• Stat thresholds and numbers. No ranges, caps or decay rates published.
• Affinity in co-op. Whether it is shared or per player in a session is unstated, though the definition implies per player.
• Consequences of low Morale. Whether villagers leave, refuse work or simply complain is unknown.

These gaps are tracked centrally on the wiki index and in the searchable database.
