Guide
Farming is the best-documented production system in Hawthorn — and it has one rule that determines whether it feels good: crops need watering, and you should not be the one doing it.

Short answer
How does farming work in Hawthorn?
You plant crops and water them so they grow. The critical detail from the Winter 2025/2026 development update: if you want, NPC farmers will happily do the watering for you.
That makes farming the first system you should delegate and the last one you should scale by hand. Plant small, assign a farmer, then expand.
Almost every village sim has a maintenance chore. In Hawthorn it is watering, and it is unusually punishing early because it is a hard growth requirement rather than an optimisation. Unwatered crops simply do not progress.
Two consequences worth internalising before you plant anything:
The current build lets you assign NPCs jobs instead of jobs being hard-coded, and the studio gave watering as the concrete example: “if you want NPC farmers will happily do this job.”
The catch is preference — not every NPC will enjoy doing every job. So delegation is not “assign the nearest villager”, it is “find the villager who wants this work”. Practically:

Without published tile costs or growth times, layout advice has to be structural rather than numeric:
All four seasons are in, with rain and snow bringing unique challenges, and an updated weather system shipped in the Summer 2026 build. Rain plausibly reduces your watering burden and snow plausibly increases other costs — but NEARstudios has not published the interaction, so this wiki does not assert it.
What you can plan for safely: seasonal change alters which resources are available, because resource placement is procedural and event-aware. Build a food buffer rather than a just-in-time supply line.
See Seasons & Weather for the confirmed seasonal picture.
Farming is the area where this wiki is most deliberately thin, because the numbers that most farming guides are built on simply do not exist yet:
