Hawthorn has no classes, skill trees or stat allocations — so the useful “build” is a decision about which loop you own. Four editorial playstyles, each anchored to a published system.

Short answer
What is the best build in Hawthorn?
There is no best build, because there are no build mechanics. Hawthorn has no classes, no skill tree and no stat allocation — you create a character from species and backgrounds, and the only confirmed species difference is Owl flight.
What you can choose is a playstyle: Farmer, Builder, Explorer or Host. In co-op these become the four roles; solo, they are the order in which you hand work to villagers.
“Hawthorn build” is a popular search, and most sites answering it will eventually invent a tier list. There is nothing to tier. Based on everything NEARstudios has published:
So this page answers the search honestly: here is what you can optimise, which is how you spend attention — and in Hawthorn, attention is the scarce resource.
Editorial playstyle: own the food chain — crop plots, watering routes and NPC farmers — so the village never starves and cooking stays supplied.
First hour
Sends surplus food to the Host for gifting, and raw materials to the Builder.
Editorial playstyle: focus on housing, layout and decor so villager Happiness and Morale stay high and new recruits have somewhere to live.
First hour
Requests materials from the Explorer, and asks the Host which decor each villager actually wants.
Editorial playstyle: range into the wilderness and the ruins for resources and treasure, and feed the crafting pipeline back home.
First hour
Dumps materials at central storage for the Builder, and flags seasonal changes to the Farmer.
Editorial playstyle: work the social layer — dialogue, gifts, decor and jobs — to raise Affinity and unlock friendship events.
First hour
Feeds decor and job preferences to the Builder, and food for gifting comes from the Farmer.
| Playstyle | Focuses on | Stat it moves | Best paired with |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Farmer | Crop plots, watering, food crafting | Villager Happiness (via job fit) | The Host — food becomes gifts |
| The Builder | Layout, housing, decor, hauling routes | Happiness → Morale | The Explorer — steady material supply |
| The Explorer | Foraging, ruins, seasonal resource shifts | Indirect — feeds crafting and building | The Builder — demand for materials |
| The Host | Dialogue, jobs, gifts, decor preferences | Affinity (per player) | Everyone — preferences drive every assignment |
Solo, a playstyle is a decision about what you want to handle personally and what you want villagers to handle. A practical order to test is:
In co-op these become a job split rather than a personal preference. The full reasoning is on the Co-op Roles guide, but the short version:
