Yes — but “small-scale”, and several of the details players most want are still unpublished. This page answers the question first, then separates what is confirmed from what is not.

Short answer
Is Hawthorn multiplayer?
Yes. Hawthorn supports small-scale co-op — Steam lists online co-op and LAN co-op alongside single-player. In the current build, co-op runs as private sessions you invite your Steam friends into.
What is not confirmed: the maximum player count, whether all players share one village and one save, and whether co-op works in the public demo.
The only official description of the session model comes from the Winter 2025/2026 development update, which states that co-op/multiplayer is now set up as private sessions where you can invite your friends on Steam to join you.
That single sentence tells you three useful things: sessions are invite-only rather than public matchmaking, they are anchored to Steam friends, and the design intent is playing with people you know rather than joining strangers. It is consistent with the “small-scale” framing everywhere else.
For the practical side — setting up, dividing work and avoiding the usual co-op trap of everyone doing the same job — see the Multiplayer Guide and the Co-op Roles guide.
Solo is a first-class mode, and the villager systems are what make it viable. Because you can assign NPCs jobs — and NPC farmers will water crops for you — the work that a friend would normally absorb can be delegated instead.
The trade-off is preference-driven: not every NPC enjoys every job, so solo play pushes you towards matching villagers to work they like rather than simply filling roles. Start with the Villagers guide if that is the mode you plan to play.
